What is a Culturalist?

Company Culture is essentially about WHO a company is, which powerfully enables HOW and WHAT they DO.

In three words, it’s about Believe, Behave and Become. Practically, it manifests in think, feel, do. You could also think of it in terms of People, Process and Products.

Over the years, I developed a philosophy and approach for understanding, designing and implementing culture expressed through the phrase, “Culture is a Person”, who I like to call Bobby. Like every person, Bobby is made up of essentially two parts: Personhood (Values) and Personality (Vigor). Values inform Vigor, so in very pragmatic ways we can design our Bobby and thereby express and live out our company culture.

The job of a Culturalist, much like a parent, is to create and raise to maturity the “child” Bobby, to the point where they reach mature adulthood. Through instilling values (internal), they guide and enable vigor, externally. It boils down to essence – being – and expression – doing. Inside the organization it’s about health, education, and enablement. Outside the organization it’s about connection, interaction, and impact.

To sound almost simplistic, a Culturalist’s primary task is to build and raise a company’s Bobby.

So, very practically, the Culturalist shapes the internals of the company (heart, mind, soul strength) in order to facilitate the full, fruitful expression of its people, processes and products. A healthy culture produces happy, productive people, who in turn produce satisfied, connected customers.

Does your company have a Culturalist? Are you being intentional about designing and raising your Bobby? Join me in learning how to create your own unique company culture at our one day training in Event.

Why Branding Isn’t Enough

“What’s your brand?” We’ve heard the question a hundred times, and as we try to give an accurate answer we have that uneasy feeling that somehow it sounds a little hollow or unfinished. Brands are interesting animals. They can be cultural forces, like Coca Cola or Apple, or cultural failures, like Enron. They give us hooks to live by, associate with,

Culture is a Person

Every company, corporation and start-up has a Culture Person, whether they’re aware of it or not. Let’s call this Person Bobby. Your customers and clients are meeting Bobby every time they interact with you or one of your employees. In every person, there are two fundamental elements that make up who we are: our personhood and our personality. Personhood is derived from our values and personality expresses our vigor. Each
